The father of Hellen Wendy Kemunto, the Kenyan nurse who drowned while swimming in a pool in Canada said yesterday that his daughter died naturally and the incident should not be linked to witchcraft.

John Kiyondi told mourners during Kemunto’s funeral at Botire village, Bomachoge Chache constituency in Kisii, that her death was the will of God.  He said he does not believe in witchcraft, stressing that due to the distance between Kenya and Canada it was not possible for a witch to travel there to bewitch her.

“She died naturally. Maybe she had a muscle pool. God gave us the child and has taken her. I cannot blame anybody,” Kiyondi told mourners.

Kemunto, he noted was the family’s pillar, as she was not only helping him but also her siblings by paying their school fees.

He lauded friends and relatives in Canada and USA who raised funds to help the family ferry the body home, saying it had enabled the family to accord her a befitting send-off.

“We are sad within our memory, lonely are our hearts today- for the daughter who I loved so dearly has been forever called away. We think of her in silence and no eye may see us weep.”

The deceased’s mother, Alice Oanda, said: “I feel such pain and miss you, my lovely daughter. No words can heal the heartache or take away the memories of the daughter we loved so dearly.
